External Forces

Weight 131
Steps 8300
Calories, 2500

So, I had an experience yesterday that was a great learning experience and something we apparently never stop going through.  They say that God keeps testing you until you learn your lessons, and I think I have finally learned a lot about personal relationships.  I vaguely remember in Junior High where the band of "popular" girls would focus in on a target and torment her by starting rumors, taking behind her back (within earshot, or to a person who is certain to relay the information).  I am 40 and have learned that some girls never outgrow that.  When I learned that someone who I am not accountable to was complaining about how I time block my day because they didn't want to deal with the mildly unpleasant task of asking a person to leave a voicemail, I exploded with anger.  I couldn't help it.  The reason is because of the conduit that was used, someone I thought was a friend.  And, that person not only told me what was said about me, but went on to defend that person's point of view.  I was hurt and livid.  I did what I always do when I deal with something difficult, I study it.  How to manage anger, phrases for dealing with difficult people, etc.  None of this was helpful, it only fueled my anger.  That is until I read something that put everything in perspective.  The biggest question I had was, why?  Why do women feel the need to tear other women down?  Because they feel inferior and they are competing with you. Sigh.  Now I get it.  While I can't empathize and refuse to sympathize, I accept that it exists.  It exists in men too by the way.

So, I implore you all to consider your friends.  Do they ever speak ill of others for very superficial reasons?  Then, they speak ill of you.  There is a quote that says something like, "I'm not upset that that person was talking about me, but that you are a person they thought they could talk about me to."

I Just Can't Stop Eating

Weight 233.2
Calories 3184
Steps 10,903

So, I started off this day with the best of intentions. However, my eating got out of control right away.  I brought some smoked turkey sticks for my 3pm snack (that's always when I feel drained and need a pick-me-up).  I brought the entire package to work thinking I would have a couple at 3pm, and they would last me several days.  I had the entire package devoured by 11:30 a.m.

When I got home, I had two servings of chili instead of 1.  I was full after 1, so why did I eat the second ?  UUUUHHHGGGG!  I have to get this under control.  It's clearly my main problem.

As you can see above, I had no problem getting my steps in!  I took my mini-walks at work and did some straightening of the house when I got home.  I'm very proud of myself.  I can't say that I notice any difference in how I feel or that my concentration has been better.  I still crash around 3pm.  But, it is really too soon to tell.  I will keep doing it.  I know one thing, it isn't hurting me.

So, the biggest thing for me to do is to cut my calories in half.  I lose weight pretty quickly at 1500 calories and a steady workout schedule.

I think one of the things I need to do is to cut calories within my meals i.e., less cheese, butter, etc.  If I can feel stuffed on less calories, that may help.

When my mom moves out of my house, her bedroom will become my workout room;  I'm so excited!!

Conquering Feelings of Guilt

Weight: 230
Calories: 2985 (ouch!)
Steps: 6192
So, as promised, I want to first follow-up with how I did with my steps.  I did pretty good at getting up every hour and taking a brief walk around my building.  I did a total of 6192 steps yesterday.  I might have actually done more, but I had paused my pedometer throughout the day when I wasn't deliberately walking.  My friend David pointed out to me that wasn't really necessary and we did some tests with me just moving my arm to see if it logged as steps and it in fact did not.  I don't know how it knows, but it knows.

The first few times I did the walk, I was out of breath and a little light headed when I got back to my desk.  As the day went on it got easier energy wise, but my motivation to walk was less. I did it anyway.  One hour I missed because I just couldn't pull myself away from my work, but, I did 2 laps the next hour to make up for it.   I will keep doing this walk because I think it is critical for circulation, etc.  I'm sure will not  affect my weight so much because it's not like I break a sweat or get my heart rate up or anything, but, it can't be healthy to sit still for 8 straight hours. If I can manage it, I will try doing 2 laps per hour which would put me well over the 10,000 steps I am working toward.

So, that's how steps are going and, moving forward, I will not only post my weight and calories, but will also post my steps.

Now, to my subject:  Guilt.  Not guilt of having eaten too many calories or fallen short of my goals in any way.  In fact, it's very easy form me to say "screw it, I'll just start over tomorrow."  I'm talking about guilt for taking time out for myself.  Why do I feel so guilty?   Even as I type this blog, I have an overwhelming feeling of, there's something else I should be doing. . .   When I say guilt, I'm talking about a specific burning feeling in my gut.  I don't know if it's actual guilt or fear or anxiety or anger, maybe it's a mix of all of those feelings, but it actually burns.  I feel it.

Last week I did some aerobic CD workouts in the morning.  I was so proud of myself, but that entire week I had a burning feeling in my gut that I was dropping the ball somewhere else.  It didn't help that I was pestered by the attorney I work for (part-time at home) more than usual for what seemed to be nonsensical manifested emergencies which were not emergencies at all.  He just had this sense of urgency that he thought we were missing deadlines (we weren't) and that everything was falling apart (it wasn't).  Mind you, he had no idea that I had taken time out for myself to workout, but you see this is how the universe works against me.  I feel like I have everything in place with my schedule so I squeeze in some time for myself and the world around me goes crazy.  Well, at least that's how it seems.  A similar thing happened earlier this year when I had developed a routine of hitting the gym in the morning before my full-time day job.  It caused me to be a few minutes late every morning and my boss reprimanded me for it.  My bubble was burst and that whole routine fell out the window.

It doesn't take much to throw me off course.  My motivation is a very fragile delicate thing.
We hear this a lot from moms.  There's so much to do for everyone else that there's no way to squeeze time in for yourself.  Fitness gurus respond simply by saying something like, but if you don't take care of yourself, you aren't giving your best to your kids, or, you owe it to your kids to take care of yourself.  While I don't have children, I do have a 60-hour work week between a full-time and part-time job.  Both of which are demanding.  Anyway, that doesn't solve the problem of the overwhelming guilty feeling.  There has to be more to it.  It's a more deeply embedded psychological issue.  It isn't simply knowing that taking time out for yourself really does benefit others.  If it was that simple. . .

While I believe it's absolutely true that I am a better employee when I feel good, I'm not sure that matters much to my employers.  They want to feel like they own some of my time.  That's what they are paying for, my time.  That's not really how I see it.  I mean, what is so magical about the hours 9 to 5 other than you want complete control of my schedule?    I feel like they are paying for my work, and, if I don't have a specific appointment to meet with or talk with someone, why can't my hours be a little flexible.  I'm a good worker.  I'll get the work done.

I did have a scary realization out of all of this.  I love working.  I have no problem putting in long hours. There were times I stayed at work until 7pm for boss no. 2.  I thought that entitled me to pop in at 9:30 a.m. the next morning, but I was met with, the hours are 9 to 5 and I don't want to have this discussion again.  Okay.  Fair enough.  You're the boss.  So, my realization is that, if I want a flexible schedule, I have to be the boss.  That's where it gets a little scary.  But, it has to be so.  It has to be so.

10,000 steps per day

Okay, one of my biggest obstacles has been getting off the fat train.  What do I do?  Where do I start?  Diets don't last for more than a day.  And, if I do get on some health kick, it doesn't last and once it's over, I gain all the weight back and then some.  So, I really need to analyze some things here.  First, my life style.  I sit behind a desk all day.  Everything is at my fingertips for efficiency purposes.  When I think about the amount of time that I am actually up on my feet, it is scary.  I am very sedentary.  So, I have set an alarm to go off every hour at work, at which point I will get up and take a stroll around the building (approx. 650 steps).  If I do this 7 times per day, I will have walked 4550 steps while at work.  It's not 10,000, I know, and I will need to figure out how to add more steps throughout the rest of my day, maybe I do several laps at lunch time, but I this is at least a start.  I will let you know how it goes.  Hopefully I have the time during the day to take these mini-breaks.  Maybe I'll be more productive by doing so.

Finding my Why

Weight 231
Yesterday, I had dinner with my sister and some friends from work.  I was having a great conversation with everyone, and then the person who was sitting to my right had to leave.  He was sitting by a large window.  It was dark outside which made the window basically a mirror.  I saw myself in a shadowy form.  I was huge.  I don't know why I still get surprised.  I'm 230lbs.  Of course I'm huge.  But I do forget.  I looked like one of those people who ride the cart at the grocery store all squished and spilling over the seat.  From that moment on, I was not a normal person sitting at the table.  I was the fatso at the table.  I just want to be normal.

What a lot of people probably assume, but most fat people won't admit, is that being fat is difficult. You get out of breath tying your shoes, walking across the hall, steps are daunting.  Your clothes never seem to fit right.  And sex. . . Aside from what Ralphie May says, fat people have a lot of difficulty having sex.  In fact, it's nearly impossible.  I can't remember the last time I had normal sex with my husband.   It's been years.  That's my new why.  Sex.

Newly Inspired

I haven't been on here in a while or made much progress, but, I just watched Jillian Michaels' "Maximize your Life" and am newly inspired.  My life has been stress city.  We had a custody battle, in which the bio-Mom was on a major brainwashing-alienating campaign and my husband ended up allowing the step-dad to adopt them.  They moved to Costa Rica, permanently.  That was over a year ago.

On the bright side, we bought a new home!  My husband is starting a new career!  Things are really looking up for us.  Its been a long hard road, so, it's about damn time!!!

My weight sky-rocketed to 230, but is now down to 220.  I have a Planet Fitness membership.  Today, I am going to begin eating less and moving more.  My meals do not, in any way, push me over the edge calorie wise.  I just need to cut out alcohol and snacking.  That's it.

But, I will have to replace that with something.  Crack I think.  No?  Not a good idea?  Okay then, maybe I will just make blog posts and that will be my new obsession and I won't self-medicate with food.  Maybe I will practice my piano.  I don't really know yet, but I can't use food anymore.  That's what they just don't get.  There is an underlying reason that we medicate with food.  Our medicine can't just be taken away and replaced with nothing.  That's cruel.

Maybe my problem, is I don't have a strong enough "why".  Have you heard that one?  A favorite among the ultra fit.  Not all bad, but my "why" seems very superficial so I can't feel too passionate about it.  Longevity - big whoop.  Maybe I want to maximize my life.  What the hell does that mean?  Become an adrenaline junkie?  No. Well, something to figure out.

145 by June 2013

At 210 this might seem like an impossible goal, but all I have to do is lose 5 lbs a week.  I've gone mostly vegan and am working out at least 30 minutes a day.  I think my taste is changing because Saturday my husband and I had bourbon chicken and it wasn't as delicious as it normally is.  Since I went to the doctor last and was told my blood sugar was high, I proceeded to gain another 10 lbs.  It was actually a blood sugar scare that prompted me to get back on the horse and get this weight back off.

Right now, my diet consists of Frozen Amy's vegan meals, frozen veggies, frozen fruit, Ezekiel Bread, carrots, hummus, melba toast, salsa and baked tostitos, oatmeal, cheerios and almond milk.  We have to go out of the house if we want to cheat and we're trying to save money, so that is an insentive to stay on track.

I did it before, so there's no reason on earth I can't do it again!

No Longer a Joke

Well, if you've been reading this blog at all you know that I'm always trying some new diet, and I am constantly falling off the wagon.  One of the biggest reasons is that my husband and I totally bond over junk food.  Seriously, I think if someone would ask, what would you rather do, go to Disney World  with a close friend or hang out with your spouse watching a crappy movie and eating Doritos, we would pick the latter. (Feel free to insert some other fascinating place if you're the kind of asshole that would say Disney is lame)

It was clear that last year we both let ourselves go.  My husband pretty much eats what I feed him and he's never going to complain that the food isn't healthy enough.  If anything, the healthy food I feed him never seems to agree with his system.  I blame his Grandmother. She actually used to feed him all yolk scrambled eggs when he was little because he liked it.  Thanks Grandma!  Now I have to undo all this shit!

My husband, we'll call him Bob from here on out, (because that's his name) was in the Marines and so, he was basically forced to be in good shape when he was younger.  Also, during the years that he was 25 - 45, he put on local Elvis shows. Not corny ones (unless you think all Elvis impersonators are whack).  He was really good and his shows were always sold out.  He taught dance at Arthur Murray for a while as well.  I tell you this to explain why my husband could get away with eating crap and staying thin.  He was pretty active.

Last week my husband had his scheduled physical. At just under 260 my husband was looking pretty huge.    His EKG was not normal, he is borderline diabetic and he is at risk for kidney disease.  She also put him on medication for high blood pressure.  Not good.  The doctors orders were low carbs, low fat, low sodium, eat three different fruits per day, and eat fish at least 3 times per week.

I have to say, the biggest challenge here is the low sodium part.  Veggies have to be fresh or frozen.  The soduim content in a can of anything is outrageous!  I bought every kind of Mrs. Dash there was.  We cannot use salt substitute because it will react with his blood pressure medication.  I cannot use soy sauce or Warchestershire because it is way to high in sodium.  I use a little olive oil, but cannot cook with butter like I used to.

Bob and I have been losing about a pound every day.  My next several blogs will be on recipes and products I have found that fit out diet.  I had so much fun shopping with Bob last night.  He is basically a nutrition idiot.  I've never met anyone who knows less about nutrition than him.  Yesterday we read the back of everything before we bought it.  Not just the nutrients, but the ingredients.  We were totally bonding over health food!!!

This time, not sticking to our diet is not an option.

How to Get Hubby on Board.

Weight 201.
I suppose we all have reasons why we keep failing.  It seems to be the same thing that makes us give in.  For me, it was my husband.  I could be good Monday through Wednesday, but Thursday, when my husband was home with me, all bets were off.  Why?  Because he was always in the mood for yummy food - to sit with his wife, watch a movie and have some Chinese.  Why didn't I just put my foot down?  Because I missed him, and quite frankly, movie night and Chinese with my hubby is too awesome to resist.

So, to keep from falling off the wagon on Thursday, I decided I have to get this man on board.  How?  I listened to all of his excuses about how this or that was inconvenient to eat at work.  I said, "Why don't you just count calories with me.  Then we can eat whatever, just within the calorie limit. . . "  His problem: "I don't like the burden of having to enter it.  I just don't do it."  Lightbulb.

"How about if I preplanned our food for the week?"  "Let's try it." he says.  I find out what is easiest for him to eat at work.  Turns out, he can do wraps pretty easily (as long as they're not too messy).  So, all week, we've been eating as follows:
Breakfast: Oatmeal
Morning Snack: Fruit
Morning Snack: Banana

Lunch: Wrap (Hummus, Lettuce, Cucumber, Tomato) - This recipe will change next week to keep us from getting board.

Dinner:  For Bob Sun - Wed- can of soup, For me, every night, 8 oz meet and a bag of steamed veggies. I cook the meat in water instead of oil.  It's not boiling.  It's a technique I made up.  You have to be on the ready to add more water when it dries up,  but it turns out great.

Total calories for this day is right around 1500.  Perfect!!

We've both been steadily losing weight.

Tonight is our first Thursday.  Why am I not worried?  Because, when my husband asks, "What are we doing for dinner?"  I can tell him, 8oz meat and a bag of steamed veggies.  He might complain a little that he's still hungry, but, if so, he can have some fruit or popcorn w no butter. Because he's been seeing results on the scale, he's excited, which makes it easier for him to play along.

Wish us luck!

Quickie

Weight: 204

Well, I stayed within my calorie range again.  Working out BEFORE dinner has helped a lot!  I ate pasta with marinara last night and was stuffed!  If I workout tonight, I'll swim I think.  I could really feel it in my arms and back on the eliptical.  I was only able to go for about 10 minutes.

My workout shirt really showed off my fat rolls!  It didn't have the same compression as the others.  If I were still in my 20s,  I would have had to throw on a T-Shirt, but I decided, the humiliation was good for me.  If I don't want to be humiliated by my fat rolls, I better lose some weight!  Can I get an Amen? AMEN!!

I'm Back!!

Weight 205 (down 2lbs from Monday)

I stayed under 1500 calories yesterday!  I also had a great workout.  I went straight to the gym from work.  It was busy, but the Y is huge and, while the weight machines are usually taken, there is always a treadmill or eliptical available.  My mile time is high, 12 minutes, but I still get through it.  I did 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the eliptical.  On the eliptical, I grasped the handles at their farthest away point, so I got a really good back and arm workout.  I'm almost glad the weight machines were taken.

My husband and I are going to celebrate Valentines Day on Thursday.  We don't know where we're going yet, but I think I will do my best to eat healthy.  I'm going to try to convince him to go to the gym first.  We'll see how that goes.

Starting Over Again. . . again

I tipped the scales at 207 this morning.  I could feel this comming for a while.  I've just been having a good ol' time shoving food into my mouth.  My Dad got me a book for Christmas called "The Maker's Diet".  I'm going to try it.  It's basically low carb, but, I am shocked by some of the things the Bible tells us not to eat, i.e., shrimp, lobster, pork. . .  He gives great reasons scientifically for why these foods might be bad for us.  It's mostly about how the food they eat is processed allowing the bad stuff to stay in their bodies and subsequently be eaten by its prey (us).  So, some of the foods he says to eat is a no brainer, i.e., leafy greens.  Some of what he says is shocking, i.e., no beans.  Lentils are okay to eat, but no other bean.  Interesting.

I haven't really decided what I am going to be doing, although, I will say, I've stopped eating shrimp, lobster and pork.  It skeeves me now.

I'm going to count my calories for sure.  I'm thinking 1500 per day sounds good.  I'm also going to go to the gym straight from work.  The bad thing about that is the gym is packed at that time.  It is the only time to go, however, since I proved to myself last night that if I try to wait until a less busy time, I just wont go.  I was going to put in a workout DVD, but I just couldn't get into it.  So, basically, last night I lounged around the house in my gym clothes.

Fat Girl v. Skinny Girl Salads

I've wanted to address this issue for some time.  My mom, my sister and I were all sitting at a restaurant getting ready to order food.  My mom and I (fat girls) were discussing how high in calories salads are.  My sister (skinny girl) angrily protested saying, "Salad is the healthiest thing you can eat!  It's got roughage, you throw on some strawberries, chicken, pecans and some vinaigrette dressing, and you have a healthy low calorie meal!  It did no good to argue with her because she was absolutely right.  But, that is not the type of salad my mom and I were talking about.  That is NOT what goes on a fat girl salad.  When fat girls think salad, they think Cobb salad with ranch.  In case you do not know what goes into a Cobb salad, it's bacon, eggs, blue cheese, avocado, and bacon. Or, we're thinking chef salad with cheddar cheese, ham and turkey and ranch. All high calorie items.  If you are counting calories, you might as well have a cheeseburger and probably spare yourself about 500 calories.

I'm not saying fat girl salads can't be healthy.  The salads I make at home consist of the following:

1 oz walnuts
1/2 cup slices cucumber
1 oz crimini mushrooms
1/2 oz pumkin seeds raw
1 serving raw sunflower seeds
1 serving organic spring mix
2 servings shredded cheese
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

That is a healthy salad folks.   It's also over 1600 calories.  That's a whole days worth.  The only way to get away with eating that many calories and not gaining weight is to be on a low carb diet. Walnuts, olive oil and cheese are all high calorie items.  1 tablespoon of olive oil is 120 calories.  1oz of cheese is 120 calories and, yes, walnuts are healthy, but 1 oz of walnuts is 190 calories. God forbid I throw on some healthy avacodo.  At the end of the day it is about calories in and calories out.

A later discussion with my sister about this topic helped me to understand better the attitude skinny girls have toward fat girls and it is basically this:  Fat girls know nothing about nutrition and what is good for them. Well, that couldn't be further from the truth.  Most fat girls, maybe because we are so obsessed with food, could tell you the glycemic index of a tomato, and the benefits of lycopene, without having to think about it.  - I also want to add the side note that, while I do have extra body weight, I pass every physical with flying colors,  I can run a mile in under 10 minutes, and  I have preferred status on my life insurance.  I am healthy!

You see, its not a matter of knowing, nor is it necessarily a matter of self-control.  Its a matter of taste.  Just as some people enjoy cake and ice cream, I could go without it.  If someone told me I could never have it again, I seriously wouldn't care.  That being said, some people enjoy these foods on a level I could never appreciate  That, folks, is the difference between fat and skinny.

Did I Binge?

Okay, so yesterday I think I may have binged, but it's hard to tell.  I did put on a couple of lbs.  Let's review what I had:

1/2 grapefruit for breakfast
1 Apple and 1 nectarine for lunch
6 oz Chicken w cucumber & tomatoes

Okay I also had 3 bloody marys with pickles, but come on!!

I was down to 194 yesterday and up to 197 today.  I am really worried that I have slowed my metabolism.

The rest of the weekend I need to work hard to stick to the diet exactly, but it's so hard.  I'm hungry.  I have a headache (probably from the bloody mary's)  I'm feeling a little nauseous.  A large salad with some avocado, blue cheese, walnuts and olive oil would be so awesome right now, or some eggs and fried potatoes, or some . . . STOP!

For now I'm chalking this up to junk food withdrawals and the fact that I had vodka last night.  I need to re-adjust and think about WHY I'm doing this in the first place.

Day Whatever

I have to stop trying to count the days like I'm going to be so diligent as to not miss a single day.  That's just not what my life is like.  So, now I have the task of coming of with clever titles for these things.

Last night I totally pigged out.  I ate a whole grapefruit for breakfast.   I was cooking for two for dinner and I didn't even weigh  the cauliflower or shrimp.  I ate a whole bowl full.  And, I had two nectarines while my husband and I watched the Dilemma.

The awesome thing about last night is that my husband loved his fat free food!  I wouldn't let him eat popcorn or anything "good" last night.  He had to eat nectarines with me.  I was pretty firm.  If I was a crack addict, would he smoke crack in front of me?  Of course not!!  I know I've said this before, but it's much clearer to me now: I am one piece of cheese away from a total relapse.  He did tell my his stomach was burning with hunger before he went to bed.  I have little sympathy.

Yesterday was very difficult with regard to how I felt physically.  There was no question that my body was going through withdrawals.  I've been through it before with smoking.  I can't tolerate anyone eating junk food around me.  The other day I walked into my bosses office to find him munching on a bag of chips.  "On a diet?" I say.  Wow.  How unbelievably rude.  But, that's how us recovering junkies are.  It's like when people quit smoking and someone lights up in front of them.  The first thing they'll tell you is that they were able to quit (insinuating what a weak piece of crap the other person is for not have the willpower to do so), then they will probably fan their face and say something like, "I forgot how much smoking stinks."  What they are really thinking is, "I really want a cigarette bad, and I'm about to tackle this guy and steel his cigarettes."   That's how I felt.  I wanted to grab that bag of chips and run out of my bosses office cramming chips into my mouth.

HCG Day 2

195 lbs.  I feel very good this morning, although I should note that I slept for a full 8 hours.  I am definitely losing weight.  Even 5 lbs of water feels good to get off. My biggest concern is my metabolism slowing down, but that's what the HCG drops are supposed to prevent from happening.

At 9:30 a.m. I was starving again and my stomach was making very loud noises.  I didn't get as nauseous from the supplements, but still a little.  Lunch time actually came and went without me noticing.  I guess I wasn't dreaming about my shrimp, cucumbers and tomatoes with lemon juice.  It did taste good, but everything does when you're starving.

Dinner was the same as last night, tilapia and cauliflower.  I was still "hungry" when I was done, or at least I still wanted to be shoving food in my mouth, so I threw some raw spinach in the pan with the juices.  Then I remembered that I am not allowed to mix veggies (tomato is a fruit), so I mixed it with my left over chicken with some cut up apple and put it in the fridge for lunch tomorrow.  I then ate a nectarine and the rest of my grapefruit left over from breakfast.

It's 9:05 pm now.  My stomach is growling.  I have work to do, so hopefully that keeps my mind off of snacking.  I am craving junk food right now like some kind of addict. I do recall reading a testimonial about a woman who claims to be addicted to food and how it is so much harder than other addictions because she cannot just stop eating.  I believe that statement is incorrect.  We need food to live, yes, but it is not an addiction like as to cigarettes.  What she means to say is that she is addicted to non-food.  Saying you are addicted to food means that an apple, or cucumber would satisfy you.  If it would, then you are just hungry.  If it won't and they only thing that will settle your craving is a large order of chili cheese fries, it is not the food that you crave, but the non-food.  The non-food is as addictive as crack.  I think I could get high from a piece of cheese right now.  No kidding.  I think I need methadone.

My name is Shayne Atwood and I am a non-food addict.  It's been 2 days since I have last eaten non-food.

HCG Day 1 (3)

I call this Day 1(3) because I have been taking the supplements, but this is the first day I do my hardcore extreme diet.  I weighed in at 198.  Hmmm.  I'm 3 lbs lighter than I was on Sunday and I haven't started the diet yet.  Could be meaningless.  Could be the supplements.  Regardless, I don't mean to suggest that supplements alone could possibly get me to my weight loss goal.  There is probably a diuretic in one of the supplements.

I made my lunch for today last night.  I sit this morning eating my 1/2 grapefruit.  I hope it lasts until lunch!!  For lunch?  3.5 oz raw spinach (that's quite a large bowl actually) 3 oz cooked chicken seasoned with only ginger, soy sauce, lemon and salt and pepper (its very delicious actually), and 3.5 oz strawberries.  I'm just using apple cider vinegar for dressing.  I did a test salad last night and it was very delicious.  Spinach seems to be a good leafy green for rather dry salads because it isn't bitter.  I actually could have skipped the vinegar if I wanted to.  I still can't believe how unbelievably good the chicken was.

So, here is is at 7:24 pm.  I am just getting ready for the second half of my work day, but I wanted to report on how it was going so far.

Basically, I had my 1/2 grapefruit for breakfast with coffee.  I took my supplements.  One of them makes me a little nauseous.  Also, yesterday and today, I was super grumpy in the morning.  However, once I realized the vitamins were making me a little grumpy, I was able to shake it off.

At about 9:30 a.m.  I was STARVING!!!  I didn't dare eat my salad yet because I wouldn't have made it through the day.  By about 10:30 a.m. my hunger subsided.  I actually didn't eat my salad until 1:30 or so.

Tonight when I came home I was hungary, but not starving.  Every once in a while I would get a hunger pinch in my belly (like a hot poker), but it goes away.  I had fish and cauliflower for dinner.  3.5 oz of cauliflower is an unbelievably small portion!!  I was  satiated after I ate, but the food tasted so good I wanted more.  So, I had about 1 oz of chicken.  Then I stopped.

I made myself a big glass of ice water with lemons and will drink water all night.  I hope it keeps my cravings at bay.  This is the hardest time of night for me.  I've had a long day and what I really "want" to do is sit in front of the TV and snack until its time to go to bed.  Unfortunately, that behavior has undesireable consequences.

At about 9:30 p.m. I got the serious fungries!  So, I ate a pickle, a nectarine and the other half of my grapefruit.  Not a bad binge.

HCG- Really doing it.

Okay, for my birthday, my Mom bought me a 30-day supply of HCG.  (See previous post).  So, I started yesterday.  The cool thing is, that for the first couple of days, you just eat what you want while taking the supplements.  Why?  Because it takes a couple of days for the supplements to affect your metabolism and if you drop your calories drastically without the supplements, your metabolism will plummet.  The HCG came with additional supplements as well, B12, thyroid supplements, and Acai.  I did notice a drop in my appetite today.

This 500 calorie a day diet is going to take extreme willpower, but I'm determined.  All I need is a plan.  So, I have actually planned out my meals ahead of time (basically for 3 days and then repeat).  I am also going to limit my shopping list to exactly what I need.  So, my menu is as follows:

Day 1
B: ½ Grapefruit
L: Chicken, Spinach, Strawberry Salad
D: Tilapia, Broccoli

Day 2
B:  ½ Grapefruit
L:  Shrimp, cucumber, tomato salad
D: Tilapia, Green Beans

Day 3
B: ½ Grapefruit
L: Chicken, Apple, Spinach salad
D: Shrimp, broccoli

Day 4
B: ½ Grapefruit
L: Chicken, Spinach, Strawberry Salad
D: Tilapia, Broccoli

Day 5
B:  ½ Grapefruit
L:  Shrimp, cucumber, tomato salad
D: Tilapia, Green Beans

Day 6
B: ½ Grapefruit
L: Chicken, Apple, Spinach salad
D: Shrimp, broccoli

Day 7
B: ½ Grapefruit
L: Chicken, Spinach, Strawberry Salad
D: Tilapia, Broccoli

My shopping list is pretty simple:

Grapefruit: 4
Strawberry: 10.5 oz
Apple: 2
Chicken: 17.5 oz
Shrimp: 14 oz
Tilapia: 17.5 oz
Spinach: 17.5 oz
Broccoli: 17.5 oz
Green Beans: 7 oz
Cucumber: 7 oz
tomato: 7 oz

My dressing is basically going to be apple cider vinegar.  I will have to mince garlic, onions, ginger etc to flavor my food.  I have to be very careful of spices because so many of them contain sugar.  I'm heading to the store now so I can get everything portioned out for the rest of the week.  Wish me luck!!

HCG Diet

Howdy!  I know its been a while.  I've been pigging out and weighed in at a "healthy" 200 lbs on Monday.  I got a phone call from my mom on Monday who said she just lost 10 lbs  in one week by doing this HCG diet.  Basically, she can have two servings of fruit, two servings of veggies, and two servings of meat.  500 calories.  Thats it!  According to the makers of HCG, taking the supplement keeps your metabolism from thinking you're starving.  Human chorionic gonadotropin or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced during pregnancy.

Okay, so I don't have $180 for a 60 day supply of these pills so I've decided to eat the same foods allowed; fruit, veggies and meat (no butter, dressing, gravy, etc.) but not limit myself to the 500 calories.  I don't know how many calories I'm eating, but without oils, fats or processed carbs it can't be much!

I weighed in this morning at 192.  That's 8 lbs in two days.  Of course it's "water" but don't knock losing water, that's also bloat!

Sticking to this eating plan is going to come down to good ol' fashion discipline.  I have to say, as I was eating my steamed veggies and broiled salmon last night, I felt empowered.

Day 4

187.6 (up .2 lbs)
Calories 3848, Carbs 46.83.

I didn't work out yesterday.  Frankly, I was so tired from jogging 4.5 miles on Monday and Tuesday, I didn't even have the stamina to study yesterday.

Tonight is Bob and Shayne night, so we're going to have to be very careful.  It's not going to be a night of snacks.  We discussed how our diet gets absolutely blown Thursday - Saturday.  We need to be able to watch a good movie without stuffing things into our mouths.  That's our first obstacle.

Second, We are going to work out every Thurs - Sat.  My husband has only those 3 days to exercise and it is my job to make sure he exercises on those three days.

About calories:
I'm beginning to wonder if there is a calorie threshold where, even though my carbs are low, my calories are too high.  I mean, there has to be something to calories in/calories out.  I know I lose weight that way.  The other day I cut my calories by 1000 and lost almost 2 lbs.  One day doesn't give me that much information, but I think I will go back to that.  Because I am eating soooo much fat, 1000 calories is not that hard to cut.  I think all I did on Monday was use only 1 serving of nuts/seeds in my salad (vs. 3), 1 oz cheese instead of 2, replaced some of the olive oil with vinegar in my salad, didn't add a tablespoon of butter to my eggs (not really needed) and voila, there goes about 1000 calories.  Yes, my salad for lunch is about 1700 calories.  955 of those calories come from olive oil alone.
